John Evans PLN Presentation

John Evans is a passionate man who is an advocate for the further development and use of technology in the classroom. His presentation brought forth many great ideas about ICT. In particular his thoughts on personal learning networks really caught my attention. Before this presentation I thought I had a basic understanding on how to use technology to your benifit as a teacher. Since hearing John Evans presentation I know I have a lot to learn!

Personal learning networks are a simple tool that allows teachers to network and connect themselves to others who share similar interests. PLN's are a great way to update yourself and continue developing your professional knowledge. They are conventient and allow you access to a wealth of knowledge 24/7. With the application of programs such as twitter and skype conversations and idea sharing with PLN's has become easier than searching the web for the information you require.

Although the application of PLN's is endless I am specifically excited about its applications for physical education teachers. With the recent development of the new curriculum for grades 11 and 12 students I feel teachers are in desperate need of a PLN to share ideas about how to implement the new curriculum documents. In speaking with educators currently teaching phys-ed I have found that their is confusion as to what is the best way to use the new curriculum. I feel that a PLN for phys-ed teachers would be an excellent vehicle for ideas to be shared through. Not only would teachers benifit from a phys-ed PLN but ultimatly the students would benifit the most.

  1. Hi Chad, I also now feel that I have a lot to learn when it comes to technology! Do you use twitter? That is all everyone talks about it seems, but I have never tried it. Sounds like a PLN would be perfect for you as an upcoming phys ed teacher with these new curriculums, and would likely make next year a lot less overwhelming instead of trying to figure everything out by yourself!

  2. Hey Chad, I never thought about using PLNs as a P.E. teacher. Thanks for springing that idea on me. I think your right that it would be very beneficial to use skype and twitter to talk with other educators to get ideas what they've done. At my placements grade 11 and 12 PE was either 100 percent in class and students took health classes and also participated in all in gym activities or they choose the 50-50 route where students took all the in class health units but only had to take 2- 2 week activity units. The other school had everyone come to class and participate in activities and bring in a log that showed that the student was physically active outside of school. Just some ideas.........

  3. I agree with Chad the PLN are great way to have learning networks. The information you gather from PLN are unlimited. A great way to have connections to expand your knowledge. I want to find out what "Art stuff" I can find using PLN.
